Velvet upholstery transforms a piece of furniture. The light plays differently on a velvet surface — catching depth in the pile, shifting between rich and muted depending on the angle. Freedom Tree's velvet range is curated for use on sofas, accent chairs and ottomans — in a palette that leans toward jewel tones (deep blues, forest greens, burnt oranges) alongside quieter dusty neutrals.
A velvet sofa or accent chair is a statement — but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. Pair velvet upholstery with Solid & Textured Upholstery or natural Woven Upholstery on other pieces to give the velvet space to stand out. Or combine multiple velvet shades in complementary tones for a maximalist reading corner.
Quality velvet upholstery fabric is more durable than its appearance suggests. Keep velvet furniture away from direct sunlight to prevent pile flattening and fading, and spot-clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Brushing the pile in one direction after cleaning restores the finish. Full cleaning should be attempted only by professionals using a dry-clean only PCE process.
Yes — a quality upholstery-grade velvet is one of the most durable fabric choices for sofas and armchairs. The pile is woven tightly enough to withstand daily use, and velvet is naturally resilient to light soiling. With proper care, a velvet sofa can last for many years.
Velvet should be vacuumed regularly using a soft upholstery brush attachment, always in the direction of the pile. For spills, blot immediately and allow to dry naturally — never rub, as this can crush the pile. Steam can be used carefully to revive crushed areas. Avoid direct sunlight, which fades velvet over time.
Velvet's pile can show indentations from sitting in the same spot repeatedly, but these generally recover with light steaming or brushing. Pet hair clings to velvet, so it is worth considering this if you have pets. A darker velvet will show lighter pet hair more obviously than a mid-tone.
Yes — velvet headboards are one of the most popular uses of our velvet fabric range. A padded, upholstered headboard in a rich velvet makes a significant impact in a bedroom. Your upholsterer will advise on the quantity required for your headboard size.
Our velvet collection is available in a range of deep, saturated colours — from jewel tones (emerald, sapphire, garnet) to more earthy neutrals (ochre, terracotta, dusty rose). The full colour range is available on the velvet product pages, with swatches available to order.
