15 YEAR JOURNEY
15 Year Journey
Our Story
For Free People
Freedom Tree is celebrating 15 years as a design house. The design sensibility at Freedom Tree is a concept, a manifesto for happiness, the courage to be yourself. As we celebrate this special milestone in 2025, we look back on our origins and revisit our unique design expressions.
Good Design Everyday
2025

As concept creators, we understand emerging lifestyle trends and their influence on products of daily use. Acting as a ‘finger on the design pulse’, we identify what is new and cutting edge, and then translate it into persuasive products and inspiration for you.
We design with joy, no pretence, and dollops of relevance. Bold and graphic in color, there’s always something unique and unexpected. Our ranges are designed in-house and produced in India, seamlessly blending identity and eclectic design elements.

Our First Launch Collection, back in 2010
Our Design and Color Strategy Studio, based in the gritty, industrial heart of Mumbai, evolved into a joyous design brand with our first store launch back in 2010.
The studio’s deep expertise in color and trend was translated into a launch collection that celebrated a joyful and more confident new India. Swipe above to sneak a peak at our first set of ceramics, decor, and home. Yet, the roots of Freedom Tree are even deeper - found in that cult brand from the 1990s: Takete Maluma

Takete Maluma
Established 1995
Takete Maluma was India’s first contemporary design brand for home.
Takete Maluma, is a famous gestalt psychology experiment, which establishes a connection between the spoken word and form. "Maluma," conjures up images of a soft, flowing aesthetic, while "Takete," a rigid, sharp, angular aesthetic.
Those that found the cult store were treated to products of universal appeal: linen, ceramics, lamps and furniture, all making for a happy home.

Freedom Tree
Established 2010
Our logo stands for Freedom of thought
The Freedom Tree logo is a beautiful stylised tree. Look closely, within the branches you can see bird forms in reverse.
The tree is a metaphor for staying rooted in the context. Our thoughts and ideas - like the birds - should always be able to soar free and high, bringing new thinking to the ever-giving tree.
More About Us >
The Creator’s Studio
WEverything at Freedom Tree is the product of our young in-house design team. We work with purpose to interpret the zeitgeist through bold, graphic storytelling. For over a decade, the studio has created more than a thousand art illustrations and broadsheet prints. Another thousand drawings are frames from which we derive furniture, fabric, cushions, ceramic artworks for our design lines. All that is asked of the creators, is that the thought behind the idea be timeless, that it stays as relevant in years to come.

Responsible Design >
The love of language and onomatopoeia sound is the go-to for naming of many of our prints. India is a country of nations with diverse verbal traditions. Kiwach the beetlenut in Marathi. Kuppi the jasmine in Malayali. The form and sound coming together in the word. Kabini after a forest and Cambaya layers of color in geometry.
1Fresh and Bold Design, 15 years on
WThe brand’s opus is synonymous with fresh colors and bold prints. 2025 marks fifteen years of relentless optimism expressed through vivid design and effortless styling. This year, we revisit our print archives, and, inspired by the past, we interpret new takes on our promise of ‘Good Design Everyday.’
Our imagination travels from the designers' sheets onto fabric, furniture, apparel, ceramic dinnerware and into cupboards full of curiosities. Everything created here has meaning, a compelling storytelling.

2Landscapes of India Series
WFrom field to fabric. The designs are more than patterns—they are reflections of the living, ever-changing world around us.
The landscapes have included fields, trees, animals and birds; icons from urban streets. Lush narratives of the mind illustrated as abstractions or as escapist toile.
Stories embedded in India’s diverse environments are given voice and speak in the language of the place. Steadfast ancestral connectedness, turning into the promise of a golden future for all who are fed by the inherent richness of our land.

3Zoomorphic Animals carry our spirit
WStories of humans and animals have always been at the heart of Freedom Tree. Our love for animals remains grounded in local fauna, with deep cultural and social significance. We balance the natural and the manmade, bridging the two with fauna that connect us to nature as well as our primitive and pastoral roots.
Re-imagined from the playful to the sculptural, as decor artefacts or print renderings, our furry, feathered friends are never faraway from our storytelling. They star as protagonists or subtle motifs in our narrative designs.

4Protest Prints capture our maverick spirit
WFigurative notions and botanicals are rendered as cheeky protest prints by our studio designers. They fit easily into every home, subtly linking us to historically and culturally significant traditions of protest, and modern social movements.
One of our key values at Freedom Tree is to embody the maverick spirit. To think differently, outside the box, and to avoid conformity. We take this idea and interpret it with intention in our design. This thread of thought is what invites all lovers of Freedom Tree to be different, and express their individuality in their home and beyond.

5Cultural Traditions
WIn an age when regionalism is uniquely mined for Identity, we take pride in casting our eyes to our historical civilizations and vernacular cultures to inspire our design.
From our traditions of perfume-making, to ancient astronomy, from temple architecture to pastoral tribes. Our inspiration comes from the cusp of heritage where tradition meets trend, discovering the new in the familiar.
In 2019, we looked to the fabulous kingdoms and outposts of Southern India. ‘Under the Southern Sun’ was our love letter to South India, a region infused with vivid color in every facet of life. Our joy in the amplified colors and flavors of the sun-kissed peninsula become the framework for this collection. Featuring heightened polychromatic electricity with high voltage on both hue and contrast.

Kongu
Inspired by the monumental architecture and ancient traditions of the Southern Peninsula. Gopurams in vivid polychromy, numinous kadamba trees, and sacred temple tanks illustrate this festive dinnerware series.

WWe strive to be an important part of India’s visual identity. We build on hundreds of years of tradition, and the gravity of our visual arts and handicrafts legacy. We seek to occupy a mindscape of what it means to be a modern well-travelled urban Indian, rooted, yet free in modernity.
Sometimes it takes very little. Just cozy up, sit back with just a couple of these familiar things. Napkins, cushions, a hand painted coffee mug. Slip on a loose print shirt and lounge on a bold colored sofa.
Live expressively, practice joy. The Freedom to be yourself.
