How Freedom Tree Fabric Lampshades Are Made

Lampshade making is still very much a handcraft skill, and all Freedom Tree shades are made in India with skilled artisan producers who have practised this craft for generations. Each shade starts with a light-permeable fabric — in a print or textured detail — stretched over a double metal ring frame with internal struts. The ring and struts are covered in plastic to control how much light filters through, giving the shade its characteristic warm glow when lit. A central disc in the middle of the structure attaches to the holder on the lamp fitting. The shade itself is a purely decorative object and contains no electrical components.

Lampshade Technical Guide: Bulbs, Fittings & Switches

Freedom Tree lamp bases can be fitted with E27 bulb holders. To fit a shade, the ring around the fitting is removed, the lampshade's disc is placed above it, and the ring is screwed back to secure the shade in position. The bulb socket sits on top of the lamp base via a metal rod, and all wiring is contained within the rod — nothing is exposed. Table and bedside lamps come with a piano or pedal switch for ease of use; floor lamps come with a foot pedal switch near the base. How to Care for Your Lampshade

For day-to-day maintenance, dust fabric lampshades with a soft, dry cloth or wipe gently with a damp or soapy cloth. Use a stiff brush on the outer surface for more stubborn marks, and avoid strong chemicals or abrasives. If a panel becomes dented, it can often be gently pushed back into shape with your fingers or a soft shoe brush. For wicker and rattan lamps, clear small debris with a soft cloth; for metal and steel bases, avoid harsh chemicals — if the finish is scratched, contact our customer care team before attempting any repair.Handle your lampshade carefully when moving or storing it; tilting can loosen the internal structure. Wherever possible, store in the original packaging. Avoid placing lamps in areas of high humidity, direct sunlight, or extreme heat — sunlight fades fabric over time and high temperatures can weaken the adhesive holding the frame together.
