As the astral bodies move into the autumn and cooler winter months, Freedom Tree’s botanical well-being blooms into a new collection: Moonflower. Bridging earth and sky, it piques our curiosity about plants and their connection to planetary bodies. It leads us to be mesmerized by celestial plants, the positions of planets and stars that influence the growth, properties and energetic quality of plants.

In the context of plants, cosmic movements are used to understand the cycles of day-and-night and the seasonal changes. “People, planets and planting have always been relational”, echoes Vritika speaking for the collection. The qualities of different flora, when to plant, when to harvest, when to make or apply medicine, all have so much to do with the seasons. It has always connected the human body with the cosmos. 

It is a pulsating living thing, this allure. The gravitational pull of the planets, their enchantment. On earth, even as the heavens rotate, plants put on their best guise to tempt insects, the birds and animals in propagating their species. They have used the seduction of senses, attracting humans to desire them as plants. Mesmerizing the senses, with scent, color, beauty and even distracting the mind with mimicry.

Festive Feeling

As we move into the autumnal equinox the nights get longer. Festivities around many cultures are stacked up in this part of the year. Long evenings are abuzz with lights, with the scent of fragrance and the sound of enjoyment. Harshita designing the fabrics, feels “We leave behind the brightness and color of the vivid summer sun, and the lushness of the verdant monsoon. It's a calming experience, this moves into the evening time, and gentler weather.”

Nocturnal Florals

Stepping into what is the Moon Garden, reveals the mystique of heavily scented white flowers that bloom in the silvered light of the moon. They are our favorite flowers, the essence of what are memories of evenings growing up in India: Mogra, Jasmine, Har-shringar and Moon Flower. Their seduction extends to the night moths, beautiful long-tailed creatures with papery wings. Like constellations these white night flowers are clusters on earth that mirror the clear light of the starlit sky. weather.”

Mesmerization

Plants seduce with form, color and texture. To attract their pollinators, it is imperative to propagate. They go as far as mimicking birds and shape their own flowers into delicate bird forms, attracting these feathered creatures.

“As humans we in turn mimic the plant and use scent as seduction” notes Neeharika. Flowers from the Indian genus of jasmine and rose are the underlying scent family for the world's fragrances. “In the most traditional manner attar is made from extracting their essential oils in a centuries old technique using the Deg-Bhapka method. Freedom Tree have captured this in a textile print narrating this traditional process of fragrance making.”

Celestial Bodies

“Recognizing the attraction of plants is only a step in bridging earth and sky. The very heavens are held together by the attractive forces of gravity and lunar and solar positions influence planting and harvesting.

We leap to the suggestion that each plant is linked to specific astrological signs, planets, and elements.” says Rashi who was inspired by this aspect. This imbues them with unique properties that interconnect human health, the giving plant, and astral influences.

When we reflect on the creation process, the variety of design and choice of looks, we hope to share this joy with the house proud and creatively engaged homemaker. Top tips to navigate the collection:

In the fabrics look out for an amazing balance of florals and prints with incredible coordinates in textured micro weaves and sensual performance fabrics. Embrace the diversity of color palettes. There is something for everyone and every room in the house.

The designs are translated on a variety of surfaces and products. From sumptuous fabrics and tactile textures to decorative pieces and furniture. If you are not looking for a major change, breakfast bowls or charming cushions are a ‘picture frame’ narrating a small part of the concept. The little pops of good design and color add a conversation to your home’s journey.

The dining collections and things for the table are great ideas for gifts for occasions and milestones coming up. Remember to treat yourself to refreshing your own table.
