Frequently Asked Questions about Heavy Fabrics
Frequently Asked Questions about Heavy Fabrics
What GSM is considered heavy for curtain and upholstery fabric?
For curtains, fabrics above 180 GSM are considered medium-to-heavy weight — suitable for drapes that hold their shape and provide good light diffusion. For upholstery, 300 GSM and above is standard for sofas and chairs. Freedom Tree's heavy cotton fabric range covers both curtain-weight and upholstery-weight options in original prints.
Can heavy cotton fabric be used for both curtains and upholstery?
Some medium-heavy cottons work for both applications — particularly for curtains that need structure and ottomans or chair seats that don't take heavy everyday wear. For primary sofa upholstery, a dedicated upholstery fabric with a tighter weave and higher weight is recommended. Check individual product specifications before ordering.
Is heavy fabric suitable for Indian summers?
Heavier fabric curtains can make a room feel more insulated — which works both ways. In summer, heavy curtains can reduce heat entering from direct sunlight (effective as a solar barrier), though they'll make a room feel heavier. Many Indian homes use heavy curtains in west-facing rooms specifically to block afternoon sun, paired with sheers on other windows.
