Frequently Asked Questions about Cotton Curtains

Are cotton curtains suitable for humid climates?

Yes. Cotton handles humidity well — it absorbs and releases moisture without deteriorating quickly. In very humid coastal climates, ensure curtains dry thoroughly after washing and have good airflow around them to prevent mildew.

Do cotton curtains shrink in the wash?

Pre-washing cotton fabric or ready-made cotton curtains before hanging minimises subsequent shrinkage. Some residual shrinkage may occur on first washing — allow for this by cutting fabric slightly longer, or by buying curtains in the next size up.

Can cotton curtains be dyed or reprinted?

We do not offer dyeing or reprinting services on existing curtains. If you are looking for a custom colour or pattern, our fabric-by-the-metre range gives you the flexibility to have curtains made to order in the specific fabric you choose.

Are cotton curtains better than polyester curtains?

Cotton curtains have a natural drape and breathability that polyester cannot replicate. They handle heat and humidity better, feel better in the hand and print more beautifully. The tradeoff is that they require more care — machine washing at lower temperatures and ironing while damp — but the aesthetic result is significantly better.

How do I iron cotton curtains?

Iron cotton curtains while slightly damp for the best results — this releases creases more easily than dry ironing. Use a medium-high heat setting (cotton setting on your iron) and iron on the reverse to avoid shining the fabric. Alternatively, hang curtains while damp — most creases will drop out naturally.
