Seven Ways to Reimagine Your Living Room Set Up

The options for how to set up furniture in a living room can be endless. The best way to position your sofa, chairs, coffee table, and planters generally depends on the shape and size of your room. But what is more exciting than a little game of musical chairs - or in this case, musical furniture. Re-imagine your living room, move things around, and experience a new room.

Use these living room set up layout tricks and ideas to find a new arrangement that feels right for you.

Designate your space with an area rug

Using a large rug, like our Hexa woven rug, to unify a seating space can pull the look of a room together. As a general rule, all key pieces of furniture should fit on top of the rug. If the rug isn't big enough to contain all of the furniture, at least ensure the front legs of each piece - the sofa, accent chairs, and coffee table, are on the rug.

Keep small tables within easy reach

If your living room is frequently used for spending time with family and friends and casual snacking, choose a furniture layout that facilitates this lifestyle. Pull the seating pieces close to the middle of the room and position them so that they face each other. Place a coffee table, like our versatile Senhur coffee table in teak wood, in the middle to keep drinks within easy reach for both sides. And always make sure a side table, such as our Ovoid coffee table set or Quatrefoil side table is nearby to easily place cups of tea or small plates without getting up.

Symmetry can be soothing

Symmetry imposes a sense of visual order in living rooms. To achieve an attractive balance, try arranging identical sofas or chairs opposite each other. If your furniture pieces aren't an exact match, you can still achieve a symmetrical look by arranging pieces with the same proportions on both sides of the room. Add side tables to the decor to amp up the symmetry and give the room a more formal look.

Opt for armchairs

Less is more when furniture arranging, especially in smaller spaces. Trying to cram in too many pieces of furniture can quickly overrun a living room and make it feel crowded. Instead of two or more sofa sets, scale down the size of your furniture choices when re-imagining a small living room. For example, you can create a greater sense of space and openness with a collection of chairs in addition to a small sofa, like our big easy single seater armchairs, rather than using a second sofa or loveseat. Another idea is to use petite stools in place of bulkier coffee tables.

L is for LOVE

Try a new L-shaped living room layout. Position a sofa and a love seat around a large coffee table to form an L-shaped arrangement with ease. In the corner where the two pieces meet, fill the space with an end table, a table lamp or even a large planter like our Nuvem Gold fabric planter. A single chair like our Malabar chair in teak wood, or pouf on the other side of this group can easily be moved closer for conversation.

 Create a visual focal point

Your main seating piece should have a focal point: a window, an archway/opening into another room or even a television. Of course, arranging furniture around the TV or coffee table are the most popular choices. However, what if the only logical place for your sofa faces a blank wall? The remedy is simple—add a bookcase, like our Spindle Bookshelf in teak wood and curate an attractive set of books, curios, and art, similar to a gallery wall. Another idea worth trying is a bar cabinet like our Reflections Bar cabinet or a console unit with artwork sitting atop. This can add such an artistic charm to the room and be perfect for entertaining.
